“Thoughts of nostalgia about my parental home, potatoes every evening, without the potatoes from my father’s garden I would not have been there or we would have gone hungry. When my friends came over, my mother always said, “Then I’ll peel another potato!” They were also thoughts of longing. Longing for my friends while I’m in faraway China. Longing to sit at the table with them and gratitude for all the times they cooked delicious food for me. I wanted an ode to the house mom, the cook, the care provider. A golden porcelain potato, which you hang above the stove and which always reminds the cook that she is appreciated for the food she prepares. Something I didn’t appreciate enough about my mother. but now an ode to my mother, potatoes like jewels on the wall.”
